Applications
St John’s Wort produces an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the immune system response of producing lymphocytes and T-cells. This can be helpful where the immune system’s response has become excessive or out of control as in some chronic diseases. The plant’s compounds work against viruses by attacking the cellular membrane and inhibiting the receptor activity that is involved in abnormal growth making it helpful against viruses and bacteria. It has displayed a wide range of microbial capabilities in fighting such bacteria as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Shigella and E.coli bacteria plus strains of bacteria resistant to antibiotics such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The flavonoides are understood to help the sedative effects of the herb and produce some of its antidepressant effects. The tannins may help the plant be effective for burns and rapid healing by providing extra oxygen. They may also support its anti inflammatory quality. The phytosterols can be translated into human steroids by bacteria in the gut. They can also be used for pain relief and as an anti-inflammatory where ‘human’ steroids are missing, such as in the adrenal glands. The herb’s amino acids are the building blocks for neurotransmitters. They help to produce better connections and subsequently calm and balance brain activity. The herb is believed to help Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) by increasing serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine levels in the brain. St John’s Wort seems to lengthen spells of deep sleep but slightly decreases RE M (rapid eye movement) sleep when we dream.

About the Product
The name St John probably refers to St John the Baptist. The red spots on the undersides of some of the herb’s leaves symbolised both the blood of the Saint and healing. The herb is indigenous to all parts of Britain and the majority of mainland Europe, Western Asia and North Africa and has been naturalized in temperate parts of the United States. St John’s Wort has been used medicinally for at least 2400 years from ancient civilisations in Greece, through pagan Europe and the Middle Ages to modern times. From the early 1900s it has been used to help in the treatment of degenerative nerve conditions such as multiple sclerosis, while recent research has suggested that the herb can help to combat alcoholism.
